For all you Golfers Like Me

Here is a gem from the Fitton family archives. It is a picture of the best PGA golfers from 1940. My Dad and uncle were caddies at the local club in New Rochelle, NY - Wycagle CC so in 1940 my Dad was 12yrs. old and these golf pros came there for an exhibition, every autograph is authentic my Dad stood in line for them.
    Left to right front row:
Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Jimmy Demaret, Dick Metz, Craig Wood, Paul Runyan, Clayton Heafner.
    Left to right back row:
Henry Picard, Martin Pose, Jimmy Hines, Horton Smith, Gene Sarazen, Lawson Little, Jimmy Thompson, Sam Snead. The old man of the group in 1940 was Gene Sarazen at 38.
The group had 375 victories including 38 Major Championships.

The Fitton family owes a lot to Arnold Palmer when it comes to golf, this instruction booklet and double album from 1961 got my Dad interested in the game. My whole family (blood related) are all single digit handicaps and we love the game. My bucket list includes a west coast trip in my 914-6 to E.A.S.Y cars & coffee and a round of golf at Pebble Beach with JB.

That is fantastic Mike, what a great piece of golf history. You can't even begin to know how unique the photo is never mind the autographs.

I was very fortunate to meet Mr. Palmer several times, even played in the group behind him at Bayhill during the groups regular "shoot-out".

If you ever get up to the Niagara area let me know, golf is mandatory.

    Stay Well,
    Mike

Skilled artisans in the truest sense... Golf is about half what it was then because of what happened with ball technology, plus metal woods 'clanging' off the tee, painfully.

Hogan is rated higher...but many say the greatest swing was..

Wykagyl is two towns over from me. I haven't had the pleasure of playing there. But I have played at Winged Foot a couple of times. I spent time walking around the club house to look at the old photos and trophies. I was amused by the spike marks on the top of a door frame in the locker room from Sam Snead showing off his high kick. The history at these old courses in amazing.

I never played at Wykagyl either but yes Winged Foot, my Dad was from New Rochelle and my Mom was from Pelham. My cousin is a member at Siwanoy in Bronxville so played there also, this was the site of the first PGA championship in 1916. My mom went to her senior High School prom with the long time caddie master at Winged Foot Golf Club "Pat Collins" who also had a brother who was a long time member there. Butch Harmon and all his brothers grew up at Winged Foot since there Dad was the Head Professional there Claude Harmon, also Dave Marr was an assistant professional there. Lot's of history by you, I will be driving through that area this summer going to Parade in Vermont. Surely you have been to Walter's Hot dog stand in Mamaroneck, my dad lived there and so did the Harmon boys. http://www.waltershotdogs.com/

I lettered in golf in high school. Also went on to play on my college team. Back then golf was not seen as cool or an athletic sport. You could go to pretty much any course and play for cheap all day long and maybe see five other people. Lots of great memories!

    Hey Mike,

If you make that trip to EASY and SF let me know and I'll take you to the Olympic Club. Golf is my other addiction.
