I wasn't in love with the car, but shortly after buying our first house I dumped my expensive new VW in favor of a $1,100 beater. My wife cried the whole way home after picking it up. We weren't in over our heads, but eliminating a car payment allowed us to better save for the future. The beater car also allowed me the opportunity to learn a ton about fixing cars which I've been able to put to use on my 911 now.

Yes, way back in 1982, living in the S.F. Bay Area, with interest rates at exorbitant levels and me being a loan officer in the R.E. business I
sold my '58 Speedster #84103: Meissen Blue, w/original paint, disc brakes, short gears, 904 wheels, hot rod motor (ate SC's for B.fast up to 3rd gear).
Plus I had no garage storage and didn't want to ruin the car is how I rationalized it. Fond memories!

I've done this many times- I've always been able to plug that hole with something else.
