    FS: @eBay - alleged 1965 911

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911-...m=222025820187
    No affiliation, just curiosity.

Has this one passed here already? Apart from some wrong details, this seems quite an original car from the pictures. No Solexes and Pierburg, but it has the Nadellas and the original floor and many other period correct details.

The Vin is written as 04680, which obviously makes no sense. The problem is that if they would have meant 304680 then it is certainly not a 1965 car, which they claim it is (attention eternal bargainers on what a 1965 car exactly is: for once you can feel united and violently agree this would not be a 1965 VIN).
From its features, the car is definitively later than April 1965.

    Any thoughts?

They seem to have used the stock # from their site instead of the actual VIN: http://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/inventory.htm

And some of the features indicate that it's clearly manufactured before the end of 1965.

For an asking price of US$189,500, I'd expect the Beverly Hillbillies Car Club to present the VIN, engine, and gearbox numbers or an image of the COA along with some ownership history. Would I be in error to assume this is a 1966MY U.S. market car manufactured in '65?

    Dealer's Description:

1965 Porsche 911 SWB with matching numbers and comes with a certificate of authenticity in its original color light ivory with gold script and black interior. Beautiful color scheme that compliments the car beautifully. Very presentable paint and interior as well as the chrome and other details. Comes with the correct date stamped wheels, wood steering wheel and dash. Equipped with a manual transmission, drivers side mirror and comes with the jack, tool kit and spare tire. Beautiful example. Early short-wheelbase 911's are in highly sought after and in great demand worldwide. Don't miss your opportunity to climb into early 911 ownership before they become unattainable. Mechanically sound.

Has all the features of my May 66 build 304780 RS Deluxe, so my guess is it is probably one as well and it was made in April 66.
Mine is for sale with Robert Barrie in the UK fully restored and much cheaper(well a bit!) than this if anyone's interested

In that case the car is more original than I thought. The Webers and rubber trimmed bumper horns, the different door locks might indicate the 1966 manufacture. However I think I see non-adjustable front strut towers, 4 screw horn grills and a small ignition bezel, or were these still around in 1966?

I'm not sure about the '66-ness of this car. It has a 65 knee guard and the wood is the type that was unsupported in the back and those items were on the real 65MY cars. Moreover, they are both hard to find and they both appear to match the style of the car i.e they don't appear to have been changed. The carbs and definitely the air box also aren't from and early 66 or 65, so they are a bit of a red herring. Also, if you look closely at the left side of the engine, the chain cover has the cover plate for when the piebrurg pumps were removed. That casting was changed in mid 66 so that the blank wouldn't have to be bolted in place. The casting was the same, it was just left unmachined. I would assume that at least some parts of the engine are from 65 and that the solexes and accompanying ancillaries were removed at some point in history.

Just a bit of background. I've visited "Beverly Hills" Car Club, which is far, far from Beverly Hills. I have seen amateurishly restamped engines - the most egregious being a '74 with a 3.2 stamped with a 67S engine number... :-0

Not surprised they don't publish engine numbers nor VINs. Not saying they are complicit in the misidentification; only that their business model is to buy indiscriminately and to let the buyer do all the research and therefore be responsible.
