Becker Grand Prix Stereo Radio Signal Seek US Band Porsche 911 Faceplate

For Sale: A Becker Grand Prix Stereo Radio. This is the USA version with FM to 106 on the dial face. The radio has AM & FM bands. The radio also has a plug so an iPhone can be connected. This radio is complete with knobs and the chrome face plate used in a Porsche 911. The radio is 12v negative ground (correct for a 911). I don't know the exact vintage but according to Brett Johnson's book, Porsche offered the Becker Grand Prix Stereo US Band radio in 1967, 1968 1969 & 1970. I have had others tell me these radios were sold into the 1973 - 1974 time frame. That is all the info I have. The radio powers up but no sound. The good news is the signal seek function worked and stopped on stations as I pressed the bar. I did no other testing. Price is $395.00 + reasonable shipping. Contact john Linden Alamo, CA Thanks for your interest. 003.jpg005.jpg008.jpg001.jpg004.jpg002.jpg003.jpg005.jpg008.jpg

    I believe a "J" code radio would be 1972.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.

    "J" code is 1975-76. "A" starts in 1965.

Agree - J is nominally 73. It is my understanding that "I" is skipped by Becker due to potential confusion with "1" which may explain confused year calculations. Has anyone seen an 'I' prefix Becker?

Not sure about Becker in earlier 911s but the the only Becker I've seen in Porsche factory option list for Porsche model year 1973 was the very expensive Mexico Olympia stereo radio-cassette listed as top of range option 468. A huge Deutschmark 1350 price when the typical mono Frankfurt was approx half at DM690. Open to be corrected if somone knows better?

1967 is early for Becker stereo in car...did Becker really beat the Blaupunkt Frankfurt stereo circa 69/70 to market with their stereo radio by that much?

Pretty sure not 1972 becase this is the Grand Prix stereo shown in my 1972 dated Becker full range catalogue ...ignoring faceplate ...cosmetically it has different push button line up with BC which I understand is just the US marking AM (in other words MW broadcast band). The one in catalogue is actually marked AM.

More fundamentally distinction however is the thumb balance control is present below left knob in this catalogue and another catalogue I have from 1972 but it is not (visible) there on the one pictured for sale. (Thumb balance wheel is one detail I notice even when serial number isn't visible; something that people often overlook when they put Beckers oftentimes sourced from later Mercedes into other cars. It is one giveaway -- an anachronism along with presence or otherwise of other things that can suggest something not quite correct in claim that a car has its original matching expensive period Becker radio...if one really cares about such date matches)

Having said all that the small chrome face plate and what look to be period Becker Porsche knobs ( rather than the much more commonly seen on Becker pinstripe and Mercedes silver ring knobs) plus having correct speaker wire / pin connections are very nice touches that do suggest Porsche.

As discussed elsewhere stereo seems to have been a local fitment so even if turns out 73 and not to be a factory option it deserves testing/fixing and a place (again?) in a 911 dash.

    Good luck with the sale
