    Front strut question

When I finally got around to reassembling the '67 911S Targa, I began to put the new front struts on the car. I then noticed that on the old struts there is this plate bolted on one of them. Right or left, I cannot remember. Can some kind soul tell me what the plate's function is, and which side it should go on? I cannot find it referenced in my catelog.

    Hi Jerry

It is the cast iron adapter that keep the caliper bolt holes , (the 2 inner big holes) and the 2 outer small + the one far right are used to your S dust shield that is a S only feature , and looks different the the non S dust shields, it is open so the air from the vented disk can flow through

the picture shows the non s type dust shield , and you need of cause 1 cast iron adapter on each strut.

Lars is correct. The one in the picture is for the left side. The single mount for the S backing plates is a separate part and is for "S"s only.

Thanks so much. As I now understand the situation, when I disassembled the front suspension, I unbolted one of the backing plates and bagged and tagged it. When I began my reassembly, I went to the old Koni strut and just today removed the pictured backing plate. I had forgotten that I had previously (two years ago) removed the other backing plate. So now I have gone with Boge front struts and rear shocks. Years ago when I had a '68 912 Targa, my Porsche mechanic (a real German) strongly advised me not to put Konis on a Targa. I thought the orange was cool. Of course I ignored him and regretted my decision every time the car went over any kind of a small bump. It was painful, even with the Konis on the softest setting. Someone apparently swapped out the "S" blacking plates with the ones I have. Is that correct?

Jim, do have the "S" backing plates? Or is it even worth the effort and cost to replace the ones I have? OH, yes, as I remember the previous hack had replaced the vented discs as well with solid units. But he had still used the original calipers. Go figure. I'm going with new vented discs. And have just rebuilt the calipers from the ground up, new zinc plating and all. I love this hobby.

Now I'm starting to overthink this issue. Are the cast iron adaptors the same for both the "S" versions as well as the regular ones? What I currently have is a combination of vented and solid dust shields. Without checking this evening, I don't know which ones were on the front or the back. By looking at this cast iron adapters on the front struts, can you tell if they were for the solid or the vented dust shields?

the adapter is the same for both non vented dust shield and dust shield for vented disk, the only difference is that the vented dust shield use a special mounting bracket as the one in your picture look like a T lying down

If you don`t have the vented S dust shield but will use vented disk, you can use the stock standard dust shield a cut out the center of the shield so the space matches the vented disk open areas .( I did)

If you show us what , dust shield , rotor/disk you have it would be a lot easier to guide you.
