Dry chem is highly corrosive! I have seen plated steel go bad after exposure to dry chem. The best stuff (if you can get it) is STILL Halon.

The ABC dry chemicals are mostly monoammonium phosphate--those are extremely corrosive. The residue is acidic and also melts into a coating.

BC dry chemical fire extinguishers are sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate (potassium bicarbonate is also called "Purple K"). These are mildly alkaline and might cause some corrosion but nothing like monoammonium phosphate.

One thing to consider is the actual use of the extinguisher. Have you ever used an extinguisher in a real fire?

Our Naples fire department conducts classes in the use of a fire extinguisher. Give your local department a call and see if they do the same. I know you should never open the deck lid if you have a real fire. Shoot the extinguisher into the rear grille. Interesting.

I think mine is Halon II or halation. Stay away from dry chemical.
I also keep a larger CO2 extinguisher in the garage.

clean agent is exactly what you want. Any powdered extinguisher is nearly impossible to get out of the cracks when it's discharged.

I've always thought this was a great concept.
