What's right? 1965 Engine Cover Grill Rubbers

    Hi Guys,

Can someone shed some light. On a 65MY car I've seen two kinds of fitment for attaching the engine cover grill to the panel. Some cars seem to have rubber washers for the T bolts and others have strips. Any idea on when this changed? Which came first? Which is correct? The early parts manual I have shows rubber washers?

I've borrowed a couple of photos from the forum.

    Thanks
    David

I've seen the rubber strips an early 911 cars but not sure when it started or stopped. Sometimes things aren't so uniform. I have a friend in the Corvette world who was obsessed trying to figure out why some master cylinder guide plates on 63 Z06 cars were riveted on while some had sheet-metal screws. Was one method an indication of a faked car? He contacted GM and actually found a retired line worker. Turns out that he preferred to use rivets, while Joe preferred sheet-metal screws. So who knows?

i believe the earliest parts manuals showed a rubber washer. if my notes are correct, try #901.511.791.20.

there are commonly differences between karmann-built and porsche-built cars, if that matters.

    good luck.

Thanks John, that's a great help. Are the indent ridges in the rubber from the amount of time that the grille has been there for?
