    Apparent hybrid engine case

    Hi folks,

Two years ago I posted here a 1969 911T project purchased locally on ebay. After doing a lot of work myself, the car is now off to pros for the remainder of the restoration. Yesterday I visited my engine rebuilder, and he showed me something interesting. This is a fully numbers-matching car. However, while each part of the engine case has the same serial number, one side of the case is 1R and the other side is 2R, machined to match. He feels confident this was done at Porsche during the original build, perhaps as they ran out of 1R and moved to 2R. This seems to be an unusual quirk.

Not all like that but certainly not uncommon. Definitely not an "unusual quirk".

    Rich,
Not second guessing your engine builder but how experienced is he with 911 motors?

My 2.2S cases are 2R/3R, I also have an early 2.4E engine which has 5R/7R cases......Porsche used up what they had.

Also when an update was done on the molds sometimes it was just to one side at a time.
