    Summary

Georgia-based car that has been in the family since 1976. Numbers-matching 2.2 liter with original Zenith carburetors. The car had been sitting from 1999 until 2010 in Atlanta until it was brought to the Chicago area to be brought back into the condition that it stands today. The majority of the work went into the drivetrain to get it drivable. Instead of continuing with the exterior and interior work, we enjoyed the pleasure of driving a classic long-nose as-is. Mileage states 64k miles, but the odometer didn’t work when we got it in 2010. In the last year, other commitments have gotten in the way and I would rather it be enjoyed by someone who will appreciate the visceral excitement you get from driving it like we did here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJY5KRPSoDY and continue the work on the exterior and interior.

    Drivetrain

The engine and transmission are both in fair, but drivable condition. It idles ok and takes gas nicely - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWYpqH-lJFU. We replaced the Marelli distributor with a Bosch unit since parts for the Marelli are no longer available. We replaced the CDI box with a MSD ignition and have a 6k rev limited in place (old parts are included). The carbs were rebuilt by A&G Carburetor in Oak Park, IL. The engine and transmission were not pulled from the car. The engine probably needs the original chain tensioner replaced with the oil-fed Carerra tensioners. The valves were adjusted at H&M in Westchester, Illinois. There is a small oil leak on the passenger-side valve gasket. The fuel pump by the master cylinder was replaced with a universal one. The transmission’s 1st and 2nd gear synchros are tired and require a delicate touch and/or double clutching between shifts. The transmission will probably need to be rebuilt to fix this issue. The pedal cluster (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZzLyQ7Wn0c) and shift linkage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOJStKMLpV8) were rebuilt. All 4 brake calipers were rebuilt and the master cylinder was replaced. The front struts were replaced. We replaced the heat exchangers and exhaust system. The car also comes with straight pipes if you want to really enjoy the sound of the air cooled 6.

    Exterior

The metal of the body is in solid shape. It hasn’t been in an accident and the only rusted-through spots are the battery trays, so we replaced the dual battery setup with one large battery. The floorboards are in good shape, see pictures for details. The paint is in poor shape. The original color is Burgundy Red (color code 2424), but was repainted black sometime in the 1980’s. You can see the original color in the smuggler’s box. The body will require a full repaint as the current paint is chipping off. Electrically, the headlight switch isn’t working, so we have a separate switch for it whenever it is rarely driven at night. The passenger-front turn wasn’t hooked up, but we have the housing for it.

    Interior
The seats seem original and the springs are a bit weak on the driver’s side. The tachometer doesn’t work after we hooked up the MSD ignition. There are some electrical issues such as the gas gauge not working, the oil light being on, even though there is pressure and the oil level reads correctly. The radio is original, but only puts out static. There is a small crack in the dash and the vent at the top of the dash pops out at speed due to air rushing through it. The headliner needs to be replaced and the sunroof doesn’t work and isn’t fully shut. The carpets are in good condition as shown in the pictures. The weather stripping is cracking and needs to be replaced.
