    Question Which spark plugs?

    I'm doing a long road trip in May and wanted to carry an extra set of spark plugs. I have a 72 T with a 2.7 engine and Weber 40IDAs. My mechanic suggested finding the hottest plug. Having read some threads on Bosch vs. NGK, I'd go with the NGKs. Which NGKs would fit the bill best? Platinum or not, iridium or not? Part number? Thanks in advance.

    I've never carried more than one or two spark plugs on any cross country trip, and in 50 or so years have never needed one, but I can tell you that I've used the standard NGK BP7ES for 30 or so years in my 72 S, and not only for normal driving , but also autocross usage. They last so long I rarely ever change them.

    Ever since I installed a Permatune ( in 1972) I have had no plug problems -- even driving in city with the cold road plugs in my 67 911S. The electronic ignition produces enough voltage to cut through any plug fouling.

    "Hottest plug" bothers me. I don't know your engine or mechanic, but I can see maybe a hotter plug in the winter, cold air, local short drives. But you said "I'm doing a long road trip in May" and that sounds like warm weather and high-speed running. Too hot a plug can be dangerous to your engine.

    Agree with Ed, the NGK BP7ES are remarkably excellent.

    Use the factory recommendations for "road plugs." You can get preignition with too hot plugs and high power, resulting in burned valves and melted pistons. The factory originally recommended two types of plugs because of lead fouling under city driving conditions.

    Modern electronic ignitions and unleaded fuel eliminate the need for hot "city plugs."

    Richard Parr recommends NGK BP5ES for use with PMO's, which is what I am using now. I switched from the BP7ES when I changed from CSI to Carbs on my 3.0 SC engine. I can't say that I really noticed a significant difference, but then i'm only using it for street use in Switzerland, so I can't drive it fast.

    I'm with Ed on this although I changed from BP7ES to the BP7EIX, which is the iridium tip. Cant say I've noticed a difference.
