Which tread pattern 165R15 Pirelli did Early 911 fit; was it Cinturato CA67 or CN36?

    Hi Team

Currently Pirelli make a 165HR15 CINTURATO CA67 which came out in the '50s and was made right through to the '80s i think it was one of the OE option tyres on the 912 and early 911.

Later this year Pirelli will be producing a 165VR15 CN36 (there will be more details here https://www.cinturato.net/pirelli-cinturato-cn36 when i know more) I think that the CN36 came out in 1969, so i wondered if anyone knew which tread pattern Pirelli Porsche fitted, maybe CA67 up till 69 then CN36.

I'm pretty sure that when they went to 185/70VR15 they used the 185/70VR15 Cinturato CN36 but i wonder if they ever used a 165VR15 CN36?

It's awfully hard to prove something never happened but I don't think Porsche used Pirelli 165R15 tires.

The September 1966 options list has:
    • 9104 Conti-Radial, 165-HR 15 (nur für 912) DM108.00 $27.00
    • 9107 Phoenix, 165-HR 15 (bei 911 ohne Mehrpreis) DM108.00 $27.00
    • 9108 Dunlop Sp, 165-HR 15 (bei 911 ohne Mehrpreis) 108.00 $27.00

There were a few road tests in the short wheelbase era which listed tire choices:

In 1969 Car & Driver 1969 Porsche 912 vs. 911T Targa, 911E, 911S had the 912 on Semperit 165 HR 15 STT tires on 5½ inch wide chrome steel wheels.

Tires Approved for Type 911S, 911, and 912 Cars

A factory Service Bulletin from early 1967.
Pirelli 165 HR 15 Cinturato were listed as approved tires for the 912 and 911 models, but not for the 911S.
There were no 165 VR-rated tires listed at the time.

No, they did not. Pirelli never made such a tire. In 1967, when I wore out the dog-bone Semperits on my '65 912, I bought a set of 165x15 Pirelli Cinturatos for its 4-1/2" wheels. They wore like iron. Later, maybe 1974, when I got 5-1/2" wheels for the car, I bought a set of 185VR70/15 Pirelli CN36s and used those. Pretty good autocross and time-trial tires because they would squeal before they gave up.

I've always liked Pirelli tires, and not just because I had good experiences with them. The company ran very creative ads, and then, of course, there's the Pirelli calendar...
