    Follow-Up re: Sound Control Products

I am following up on a previous thread asking whether sound reduction made sense on a SWB targa. The consensus seems to be that sound control is valuable for longer trips.

So, the new question is what specific products have members used and how satisfied are they with the results?

I've watched more than an hour of You-Tube video on various products, but I would appreciate any tips or suggestions from Early S members.

    Thank you for your assistance.

There is a good thread over on the Bird on sound deadening: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...t-penalty.html

To summarize, the best sound deadening is a combination of at least three layers:
    1. butyl/rubber sticky stuff on approx 25% of the surface area to dampen vibrations. I used the Eastwood product, I think... The point is not to cover the entire area, just to place strips and pieces in large flat areas to dampen vibration. Stick a small piece or two in each door too.
    - Closed Cell Foam/Mass Loaded Vinyl over 100% of the surface. This stuff is heavy. I bought from Home Depot for about $40 a roll. It's hard, difficult to mold over contours and a general PITA to deal with.
    - Jute or similar padding, also over 100% of the surface. I went to the local carpet store and bought 1/2" jute under carpet padding. It was $10 for enough for probably 2 cars

Carpet went over the jute. The layers were really only a problem on the parcel shelf crossbar fitting between the 2 quarter window garnish rails.

I can dig out photos of the install. As stated in a reply to your earlier thread, this added probably 30-40# to the cars weight but I'm very happy that my wife now likes to drive in one of the Porsches...
    Cheers,

    Ron
