    1973 911 tires

Guys, I own a 1973 911 T that I have owned for 38 years. I have added 2.7 Carrera Pistons and cylinders, e cams, lightened flywheel. For many years it was a pretty serious autocross car. It has a nice firm suspension 22 mm front torsion bars , 27 rears, adjustable rear sway bar, hard bushings. Okay, now I am old guy, I will probably autocross one time this year. The car currently has old, hard Yokohamas, and they are 2:05/50 - 15s all around. Way too harsh, revvs ways to high at 60 mph. Too low, gear ratio wise and height etc. I want to put something on it that looks a little closer to stock, BUT I still want some grip. Give me some suggestions of tire brand, tire size, etc. Oh , I have the stock 73 Fuchs wheels. I haven't been up on who makes the best tire/sizes currently available. How about some suggestions?? I am in the car business, I have an account at the Tire Rack, and that is probably where I would go. So, who makes a nice grippy street tire, I won't shave them, etc, like I said I might do one autocross all year. It will be mostly a driver, and even at that not a lot of miles.????

You want a set of 205/60-15 tires. Unfortunately, the selection for performance tires is pretty limited.

I had to go to 16 in wheels to get something decent for street performance.

Dunlop Direzza is a nice grippy street tire, as long as you don't have any memories of the Bridgestone S-03

I autocross my 72 with Kumho 180 wear rating tires, minimum allowed by P.C.R.'s Don't know if they are available in a 205 X 60 but have been good autocross tire and yet I have driven a couple thousand street miles on them.

I'm running 16-inch wheels. No one even notices the difference and I have more tires to choose from.

Actully I can't afford to buy a set of 15-inch rims these days.

My 73S has Pirelli P6000 N1 in 196/65-15 ... pretty good as a road tyre, have the right amount of grip in the wet too ... if you're thinking about tracking it quite often, than go to a more specialised tyre ... I have used it in Spa, N.Ring, Zolder and it has shown its limits ...

Ive discovered I can't wear tires out anymore, they time out. I put Avon 185/70 tires on the 73 and speedo error is 1/10 in 30 miles. This is the first time with stock tires size ever on this car in 30+ years. G.Led

There is talk of the 215 60 15 Pirelli CN36 tyre making a return which along with their existing 185 70 15 CN36 would allow the mixed tyre combination (like first road use of different f/r tyre sizes and rim width 6&7s for the 73 model year RS). If rumour proves true, this tyre combination could soon be a 15" option to be considered for suitable cars. A post from a UK classic tyre retailer with connections to Pirelli (and other brands) exists elsewhere on this subject.
