    Handbrake grip removal

Hi guys, my 1973 911 I've had since 1978. Not a big deal which is why I've only just got around to thinking about it... I want to replace the plastic (slightly damaged) hand-brake grip and push button with an NOS replacement which has been waiting in the tool box for years.

Question is, how does the old grip come off, does it clip in place and pull off or is it glued? I was thinking of cutting it off with a Dremel and glueing the new one back on if necessary - Thanks!

Heat does the trick, but be careful unless you don't care about destroying it. I used a heat gun till it got warm enough to melt the glue that secures it. Also be aware that the Porsche branded replacement has a pebble texture which differed from the original smooth/glossy finish.

Thanks for that Nick, so it is glued on too. I have an original glossy NOS replacement luckily. I'm replacing the old hand brake grip because at some time someone had 'branded' the old plastic with the cigar lighter!

Besides the glue it has an alignment tab on the inside. You will have to wiggle it back and forth off the shaft about 1/2 inch before it clears this tab and you can spin it freely off. If the handle is beyond repair then by all means the Dremel idea will be much simpler. May I suggest you put a new spring in the button mech as well since you are replacing the thumb button. Comes right out when you unscrew the thumb button. Pelican has them for around $15 I think.
Nice work on the NOS handle. That thing is gold. Good luck!
