    Bad oil pressure sender?

    If the oil pressure gauge goes to the max (140+)
    and stays there does that mean the oil pressure sensor
    is bad?

    The gauge pegs on the high end when it sees infinite resistance, i.e. an open circuit.

    The gauge pegging on the high end could mean that your oil pressure sender's gone bad, but the most likely explanation is that a wire has come loose, either at the sender or on the back of your oil pressure gauge. You could also have a broken wire.

    1. Check for loose wires. If reconnecting wires makes the gauge work you're done.
    2. If there are no loose wires you want to differentiate between a broken wire and a bad sender, so
    3. Pull the wire off the sender and touch it to ground (like the engine case near the sender). This is a short circuit--it probably won't pull mega-amps through the gauge but just in case, ground it briefly.
    4. If grounding the sender end of the wire puts the needle on the bottom, you probably have a bad sender and a good wire.
