    Leather wrapped steering wheel

My '70T came with the Appearance Package/Comfort Group option which included a leather wrapped steering wheel. My car's wheel is not leather wrapped at present, but I am wondering whether a previous owner removed the leather after it became disheveled.

The surface of my wheel (i.e. that portion that the leather would have covered) is a rubber material of about 1/8" thickness that covers the bakelite core of the wheel. Did leather wrapped wheels have this rubber material on them?

Makes sense to me to think they might have, hence the question.

    Thanks

My 67S leather wheel has the same rubber over the plastic.

The part number (stamped into the central alloy hub - visible once the hornpad is removed) will indicate whether your wheel originally came with a leather rim.

Here's what stamped on the alloy hub of my wheel:

70 12 (is this the date?)

Yes, that's the part number for an original 400mm leather wheel - the 12/70 date code suggests it's not the original wheel from your car as it would have been produced during the '71 model year.

    Thanks for that definitive assessment!

Any advice on how I should go about recovering this wheel? Are there replacement covers available? I checked Sierra Madre and saw nothing.

Any special stitching or details I should pass on to the upholsterer in order to maintain an original look?

Thanks Mike. I contacted them at got this reply from Don:

    Hi,

Thanks for your inquiry. The cost to recover your early Porsche 911 steering wheel to factory's specification is.
    - Wheel $379 (Premium solid black leather).
    - Extra padding $50 (if prefer slightly thicker than stock for comfort feel).
    - Shipping $20.
Turn around time about 4-5 days.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions.
    Thanks,

Yep, that's what it cost's to have it done right. He has done several for me and I was very satisfied.
