Cocomats as an Original Equipment in 1968?

I'm in the process of getting my Tangerine Orange ("Blutorange" - 6809) 1968 911L back in action after many years of storage, and while I'm wrapping up the rest of the engine work, I'm wondering what the original equipment was for floor mats in 1968? My uncle bought the car in 1972, I bought it from him in 1992, then I put it in storage in 1994 when we moved to Europe. I just recently pulled it out of storage and am now completing the final engine work to get "Chester" back on the road!

Neither my COA nor my Kardex mention anything specific on the mats, and the earliest photo I have of the car is from 1972, where it clearly shows Cocomats. Can anyone give me a hand figuring out what mats originally came with a US-delivered 911L (#11805200). Thanks for any help on this, and here's a picture of the interior from 1972 with the Cocomats installed:

Those look like a correct period floor mat. I've had several sets of those, and some have had tags in German on them. My belief was that you could get those at a dealer (in 1968), but not sure if they were a factory orderable item (the ones pictured).

In the 1968 options list, there are 2 floor mats mentioned:
9198 Veluran floor mats, std. 911L and 911S (assuming the velour material that's same as all your carpeting)
9189 Cocoa floor mats, black (what that is I'm not sure), as I don't have a photo reference.

Hopefully someone else will pipe in with their thoughts.

I can't say with certainty what Porsche offered in 1968, but the choices in 1966 were:

    9189 1 Satz Sisal-Fußmatten (Silkos), 2teilig, schwarz 39.50 DM $ 9.90
901.551.102.15 1 set of "Sisal" floor mats in two pieces, black
Paillassons ((Sisal)> en 2 parties, teinte noire
1 serie tappetini Silkos, 2 pezzi, neri
    9198 1 Satz Veluran-Fußmatten mit Tunnelabdeckung, 3teilig, schwarz 96.00 DM $ 24.00
901.551.101.15 1 set of "Veluran" floor mats in three pieces, in colour of carpet
Paillassons «Veluran» en trois parties avec recouvrement du tunnel, teinte noire
1 serie tappetini Veluran, 3 pezzi, neri

So, it looks like your mats don't match what the factory provided but they're certainly "period correct" and pretty typical of what many people put in their then-new Porsches in those days.

these appear to be original pattern when I took delivery of my '69 911 and was the pattern that was seen at the time... the checker board pattern in the other photo has not been seen before here

Back in 1968, a Porsche 911 would probably have been purchased at a VW-Porsche dealer, and they did sell coco mats:

For a reference, my 1958 Cabriolet has the Coco Mats listed on the Kardex.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.

Yep. Coco mats were a factory option on 356s, From the February 1959 Accessories brochure:

But, for 911s and 912s the choices were Sisal and "Veluran"
