    1966 Steering Column Removal

I have searched the Forum, but have not been able to find an answer to this question. I am trying to separate the upper column and clamshell from the lower steering column so that I can remove both for paint. I've removed the actual steering column up to the u-joint where the column leaves the tube for the rack, and I've removed the clamp from the clamshell, as well as the pin. The clamshell will slide to the rear on the column, but only to the point where the diameter of the latter increases. There must be a way to get this thing apart, but I cannot figure it out. This is an early car before locking columns, etc.

If you have anything that would be of help, my gratitude will be eternal!

So you separated the top universal joint. You took the clamp off the clamshell to steering tube interface, rotated the clamp and removed the pin. The only thing hanging it up will be the cannon plugs for the switches. They are not large enough to fit through the gap themselves-- they have to be coaxed through one at a time with the clamp rotated out of the way.
