the Napa Valley incident is a key reason I avoid group drives. Seen too many incidents where a driver wants to show off... fortunately, I haven't witnessed a fatality.

We had a known to be in over his head guy roll his MGB GT a couple years ago, very luck to walk away. We tried gently suggesting he back things off since we were on public roads and he was running out of skill at lunch right before it happened, but...

I don't think there is a correlation between group drives and excessive demonstrations of careless driving. Careless driving occurs all the time as illustrated by this weekend's horrible incident. It happens alike on remote highways like this incident, urban freeways and wide boulevards in suburbia. I think it has to do more with the relative maturity (or sobriety) and skill level of the driver. I think all of us have a potential for temporary fits of immaturity behind the wheel. It is just a matter of do we catch ourselves before we endanger ourselves or others.

    Well said Doug.

EDIT - I have seen crazy driving on group events as well so I understand where Eminence is coming from.

(Hello BTW, hope to see you on a future TT again)

Interesting - no correlation between group events/track days and risk? I don't see careless driving, but I see increased risk taking. All good and I still go, but buyer beware.

You can't tell me there isn't a correlation between increased testosterone, cars, and crashes. I've been to plenty of meets to know that guys like to show off 1.what their car can do and 2.what they can do. It's called machismo and some guys have more of that than brains unfortunately

    How bout this one....
First vintage race of the year at Pacific Raceway this weekend. Novice group driver takes his 2,200 pound 400 horsepower jag XKE down the front straight with 36 other cars. Totals it. When I came around on the all course yellow I could not tell you the color of the car or the make and model. Nothing left. Driver was hospitalized - hopefully precautionary. He had just bought the car through a well known and highly respected California dealer and had it for four days.
