Thread: Which radio for a '65 911 US export car?

  1. #1

Which radio for a '65 911 US export car?

Can anyone help to find the correct radio for my BY 65 / MY 66 US Export car?
    VIN 303381.
    In books I read about:

    -Frankfurt AM/FM/LW (us Band)
    -Frankfurt AM/FM (us Band)

What's the visual difference about one with or without LW?
And what's the visual difference about with or without US band?

    Thanks

    PS: Visuals would be helpful

I believe the following radios were available for '65-'66 you could have had any one of these probably with a "V" or "W" alpha prefix number.

    911 & 912 Factory Price List - September 1965 (MY 1966).

    Blaupunkt Bremen, AM/Long Wave (#9320)(all-transistor)($80.00*)..
    Blaupunkt Frankfurt, AM/FM/SW (#9322)(all-transistor)($128.75).
    Blaupunkt Frankfurt-US, AM/FM/SW (#9323)(all-transistor)
    (US band 87-108 MHz)($128.75).
    Blaupunkt Koln, AM/FM/Long Wave (automatic)(#9325)
    (all-transistor)($172.50).
Blaupunkt New Yorker, AM/FM/Marine (automatic) (#9326)(all-transistor)
    (US band 87-108 MHz)($172.50).

    Thanks Mike,

The car was for a guy in California so I suppose that the only options that remain are:

    Blaupunkt Frankfurt-US, AM/FM/SW (#9323)(all-transistor)
    (US band 87-108 MHz)($128.75).

    Or am I wrong?

Your COA should list what radio came with the car.

The Accessories Price List for the 1966 model year (published September 1965) shows this:

    (US-Band 87-108 MHz)
    (US-Band 87-108 Mc/s)
    (frequence americaine 87-108 Mc/s)
    (frequenza americana 87-108 Mc/s)
    9323 FRANKFURT-US, UKW-, Mittel- und Kurzwelle DM 515 $ 128.75
    901.645.101.02 FRANKFURT-US, AM/FM and short wave
FRANKFURT-US, ondes ultra-courtes, petites ondes et ondes courtes
FRANKFURT-US, modulazione di frequenza, onde medie e corte

Blaupunkt serial numbers began with a letter which was a date code:
    V 1964 / 1965
    W 1965 / 1966
    X 1966 / 1967

I'm afraid I can't tell you what month the codes changed.

As to exactly what a 1966 Blaupunkt Frankfurt looked like, there are a couple sources:

These are from a 1967 Blaupunkt brochure:

    Name: ps__Blaupunkt_67_06-07.jpg
Views: 331
Size: 98.8 KB

I think this is a Blaupunkt New Yorker shown in a 911:

So, it looks like Blaupunkt might have offered both black and metal covered pushbuttons on the Frankfurt. Note that the radio in the Porsche has knobs that match the other dashboard knobs. It's interesting that that's an Amercian-spec radio but it's a European car.

    There's a photo at http://www.antique-autoradio-madness...t-serieX_2.htm

It shows an X code (1966 / 1967) Frankfurt with black pushbuttons.

My 1965 Porsche 911 does not have it's original radio, but I got this Blaupunkt Frankfurt ["V" code 1964 / 1965] from Wiford Wilkes, Sr.:

    Name: 2016-05-05 09.19.02_PS.jpg

I have one original 1965 brochure with a low resolution photo that sort of seems to show the same pin-drive bezels/nuts on the knob shafts as I have (but that's 1965).

My best guess is that a factory installed 1966 US-band Blaupunkt Frankfurt would have had the black pushbuttons and the outer rings on the knob shafts as from the 1967 Blaupunkt brochure and the photo from antique-autoradio-madness.org.

Imho, then your car came with the radio "installation" kit and the radio was picked up at the dealer. The code for the antenna was 9303, $14, and speaker 9307, $10 .

My fathers 1965 price list is below:

X code radio with the knobs and tune rings that match the earlier cars. I've got one installed in a 67 that also has these knobs/rings and a photo of another low mileage car w/ same. I'm sure that there were a few combinations of knobs that came with these cars even starting in 1965.
