if your car was not among the first few hundred shipped, the steeing wheel frame was steel vs. ALU. easier to locate & quite a bit cheaper. YMMV

That is not correct. Alu wheels were used much longer than that and I am pretty convinced also in 912's, at least that is where my alu raised hub wheel was pulled from when it was parted as a donor for a race car.

great data point & thanks for chiming in. the last time I was aware of any public discourse on the matter 300 - 500 was the number being kicked around... which would help explain the extreme rarity of the ALU framed examples.

I actually don't consider the aluminum wheels extremely rare. There is always at least one for sale somewhere. Rare? Maybe. Extremely rare? Not really. Expensive? Absolutely.

I've heard stories of aluminum wheels being replaced with steel wheels under warranty back in the day after the aluminum wheel bent. No idea how true that is but I've heard it more than once from people seemingly in the know.
