    Auction Description:

This beautiful, numbers-matching factory 1970 Porsche 914-6, VIN 9140430501, is finished in the original Tangerine over black colors. When the Consignor purchased it several years ago, it had been in storage since at least 1988, sitting in the second owner’s warehouse in a Los Angeles suburb. They had owned the car since the early 1970s and drove it regularly until the 1980s, and after his wife’s repeated complaints about his irresponsible driving with a growing young family, he parked the car in his warehouse in 1988, where the Consignor located it more than 20 years later. The car was located in California and New Mexico car from new, and service records span the early 1970s to 1988. As a result, the car had the virtually no rust, except two small areas which were expertly repaired using small sections from a donor car. All other sheetmetal is original to the car. The Porsche CoA confirms the engine is original and matching. The transmission data is not recorded, but it has a date-correct tailshaft and presumably original. The personalized blue plates are original to the car from the mid-1970s, have been reassigned to the car, and will be included for the buyer.

During 2012, the nut-and-bolt restoration began. The work was performed over 1,500-plus hours, with virtually no component left untouched, with new or refinished hardware used throughout. All suspension components were stripped and powder-coated before reassembly with new shocks, struts, bushings, bearings, and seals. All new weather-stripping and soft parts were used throughout. The brake calipers were refinished and rebuilt, the inner dash structure was removed and freshly powder-coated, all gauges were redone by North Hollywood Speedometer, the interior was completely restored with new German vinyl and houndstooth seat inserts and correct new carpeting, the Targa top was refinished, correct bumpers were re-chromed, and the original fog lights and factory leather steering wheel were restored and installed. The undercarriage was cleaned, stripped and given a light coat of Wurth SKS undercoating in the correct grey finish.

The powerful ‘flat-6’ engine was given a top-end rebuild, with heads refinished and rebuilt, and new rings and all new seals fitted as well. The carburetors were cleaned and rebuilt, and the original Bosch CDI ignition was rebuilt. A new clutch, pressure-plate, and throw-out bearing were installed. The original factory heat exchangers and muffler were ceramic-coated before installation. The engine is the stock 2.0L unit and it runs very strong, sounds great, pulls well, and doesn’t blow any smoke. All fuel lines were replaced with new stainless-steel lines supplied by Tangerine Racing, the fuel and oil tanks were restored, the brake system was gone through, a new Bosch battery was installed, and other typical service items were addressed during the restoration. Four new Dunlop tires were installed. The car spends most of the time on a Battery Tender and starts easily even after sitting for several weeks. She is fully sorted, a joy to drive, and recently serviced.

At local PCA concours events immediately following completion, the 914-6 won first in class in the full concours division, and it was a judged participant at the 2014 Monterey, California Werks Reunion. Since restoration, less than 350 miles have been driven. The car includes a full set of five ultra-rare Mahle gas-burner wheels, an original tool kit, a restored jack, the correct owner’s manual, and the original service booklet. If you are looking for a restored, numbers-matching, factory 914-6, you will be hard pressed to find a nicer example anywhere at any price.

That dash material doesn't look right, is that a dash cap? Houndstooth inserts are the Chevy Camaro version.

And the miniature Oscar goes to...

The Tijuana upholstery job on the dash.

Looks like they got their engine surface coatings mixed up: Black chain boxes and bare metal strainer plate.
And while we're critiquing; What's the popular consensus on front trunk resto? Tar on front upper strut mounts or not?

    What is the auction estimate?

Rearview mirror and center pad are not correct, I will just assume that the rear valance is not the correct short porthole one since we have no picture of the outside rear end.

I love these tidbits from the Russo & Steele write up:

"When the Consignor purchased it several years ago, it had been in storage since at least 1988, sitting in the second owner’s warehouse in a Los Angeles suburb. They had owned the car since the early 1970s and drove it regularly until the 1980s, and after his wife’s repeated complaints about his irresponsible driving with a growing young family, he parked the car in his warehouse in 1988."

I was able to blow up a picture of the trophy. It's a little slow at work today.

I hear there is a Tangerine 914-6 featured in the May Panorama and it has the correct hounds tooth inserts.

    BaT Description:

This 1970 Porsche 914/6 is a numbers matching example that was fully restored by its third owner from 2012-2014. The second owner acquired the car in the early 1970s and drove it regularly until 1988, when he parked it in a warehouse. The seller purchased it from him more than 20 years later and commissioned a thorough restoration that included a repaint in the original color and a partial rebuild of the original 2.0L flat-six. A New Mexico and California car from new, this 914 won first in class at a local PCA concours shortly after the restoration. The car has since participated in the 2014 Werks Reunion in Monterey, California, and again won first in class at a PCA concours in January of this year. The seller has driven it about 350 miles since the work was completed, and is now offering the car with a Porsche CoA, records dating back to the early 1970s, and a clean California title.

The restoration reportedly took over 1500 hours to complete and was performed by the seller’s business, AIR MotorSports in Van Nuys, California. The car was repainted in its original Tangerine (Blood Orange), and the seller states that no major component was left untouched during the restoration. A complete set of five Mahle Gas Burner wheels are included, and the four currently fitted on the car wear newer Dunlop tires. The Targa top was restored, and the car benefits from all-new rubber, from window and door trim to the seals separating the compartments under the deck lids. The car wears personalized California blue plates that were re-assigned to it by the seller, and the original blue plates will be included if the car remains in California.

The interior shows very well, and includes the only notable deviation from stock specification. The CoA notes black leatherette seat upholstery, though the seller opted instead for black vinyl with houndstooth cloth inserts. The interior is otherwise standard, with correct carpets, original gauges refurbished by North Hollywood speedometer, and a re-powdercoated inner dash structure. The front trunk is nicely detailed, with correct grey carpets in the cargo area and well finished painted and plastic surfaces. The fuel and oil tanks have been restored.

The original 2.0L flat-six appears clean and well detailed, with correct ceramic-coated heat exchangers and no mechanical modifications noted. The engine benefits from a top-end rebuild with refinished and rebuilt cylinder heads, new rings, seals, rebuilt carbs, and rebuilt original Bosch CDI. The fuel lines are all stainless units from Tangerine racing. The clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing are also new. The brake system has been gone through, including rebuilt and refinished calipers. All of the suspension components have been stripped and powdercoated, and new shocks, struts, bushings, bearings, and seals were fitted throughout.

When the car was repainted during restoration, it was given Wurth SKF undercoating in the correct grey color. The seller has provided numerous underbody photos, which detail the straight and largely original pans. Two areas were replaced at the rear of the car using sheet metal from a donor car. Engine #6404293 is verified as numbers matching by the CoA. The 901 transmission is said to be correctly date-coded and is also believed to be original, though the CoA does not note a transmission number. The seller has records for the car from the early 1970s until the second owner took the car off the road in 1988. Documentation of the restoration and the original owner’s manual are also included in the sale. The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirms this as a genuine 914/6 in its original configuration.

This car has won its class twice at local PCA concours, which is a testament to the quality of the restoration.
