    SWB Ash Tray Scholars?!?!

I am seeking the wisdom of SWB ash tray scholars. I've checked PET and the parts manual, but the answer doesn't seem clear or definitive, so I'm seeking additional input.

The photos below show a "68-only" ash tray on the left and a 67 ash tray on the right. As we all know, '68 was a transition year with abundant running changes during the year; many of those changes due to US safety regulations. The Parts Manual actually tracks some of the specific changes in specific parts, but I can't find anything definite regarding the ash tray. (If it matters, the ash tray body appears the same for both versions. Only the handle and fascia appear to be different.

Question #1: Does anyone know -- or have documentation showing -- when the change from the 67 ash tray to the 68 ash tray took place? (The dated illustration in the Parts Manual appears to suggest that the earliest 68s still had the '67 ash tray, but I'm asking whether more/better information, is available?)

The second question is about the construction of the 68 ash tray. The photos show that the face of the 67 ash tray has two holes, with a brushed aluminum face plate held in place by screws with two round plastic nuts (shown). The 68 ash tray has a large, soft handle, with the same two holes below the handle, on the face of the ash tray (as shown).

Question #2: What fascia was on the 68 ash tray, below the handle and how was it fastened?

Of course, "thank you" in advance for any educational information.

Ash tray with a brushed aluminum face plate is 65-66 912 not 911
Don't know what the other is

If you want to sell the 912 one, let me know, mine needs restoration.
    That's all folks...

    Hi Mike.
The 68' underneath the soft handle was a brushed aluminum plate that was merely glued in place. Specific little piece if I remember though...rounded edges on three sides to cover the metal underneath. If that makes sense.
I had it come off on my Targa and had to re-glue. No holes, pins, or otherwise.

Paul. What was the difference in ash trays from 911-912? I would assume there would be no reason to have different ash trays. If you could provide additional info that would be great. Thank you.

I knew I had one sitting around...the bottom of the 68' (912?) ashtray. The one with the soft handle...as was in my 68' 912 Targa.
    Phone pictures could be better....

I'd hazard a guess that the soft handle came in with the Fed Safety regs. Headrests, rubber knob covers, etc. Should be January 1, 1968.
