    Installing original radio?

I plan to reinstall the period correct radio
in place of the semi-modern am/fm/mini-
disc installed by the PO. I considered doing this
myself until I remembered the nightmare that
ensued the last time I tried this. Do I need
a Porsche garage to do this or can a generic
radio installer do this? I would like to go back to
the original look while being able to listen to
    FM.

If you have all the right pieces, this is one of the simplest things to do. Put a few pictures up of what you've got.

It looks like you have a Frankfurt, but with a Becker faceplate and knobs. I may be mistaken, but that is what it looks like to me. You'll need to source a correct faceplate, side clips and a front cover and rear bracket.
Maybe a Frankfurt for a Mercedes.

Nope that is a Blaupunkt faceplate but normally used for a Mercedes, should still work for you but won't look factory.

The real issue for me is can I do it myself? I know you
need a special tool to get the old radio out. And
I don't know how to do it. So I am probably better
off having a repair shop do it for me.

PS: Bought the radio from Oldautoradio and they
claim it is correct for my 1970 911T.

There are a LOT of pics of radio installs, here --- especially of Blaupunkts . . . that show only a small surround to the radio, frequently Frankfurts, too

What I think would be more interesting to see is how the power-supply used on some of other Blaupunkts are installed/wired --- under/behind the dash. Some of these devices look pretty-d@mn substantial, too, so . . . reeeeaaal curious how all those (heavy) pre-historic electronics get strapped into place --- let alone functioning!

That radio has never been anywhere near a Porsche! It is a European version of a Frankfurt and has some sort of home made retaining clips. I've removed/installed 100s of Blaupunkt radios in Porsches and would have trouble installing that one. Oldautoradio is full of crap.

I watched a video on how to remove the old radio
and install another one. It said to stick a nail file into
slots. I tried this and had no luck. I guess I will need
to have an installation guy do it. Though he will be
used to installing a modern system rather than taking
out the modern system and putting in an older radio.

I would not let an "installer" anywhere near your car unless his screwdriver is, as Tom once said, "made of butter."

As Jim says, that's a euro blaupunkt (you can tell by the push buttons) and it's from a Benz (you can tell by the knobs and the pinstripe face).

You want one that looks like this (shown at Koenig's classics)
