play on front wheel bearing to much/what is acceptable?

    Hi,

I have some play in my front wheels (top/bottom)
After reading 100+ threads on front wheel bearing adjustment, I was wondering how much (axial)movement was acceptable 6 & 12 'O clock.
Meaning: how much movement in axial direction from top en botom of the tire is ok?
I adjusted the front wheel bearing following the standard procedure as described many times....

    Cheers,
    Bart

history: all parts are new and spindles from strut seemed fine when I put everything together in my 18 year restoration... ;-)
    Car did after restoration 300miles.

Standard aircraft technique after packing wheel bearings is to tighten the nut until wheel rotation meets resistance, then back off until it rotates freely, with almost zero out-of-plane play. If that doesn't work, the bearing/race should be replaced.

    thanks!

    will give it (another) try......
all parts (beside strut)!is new -500 km old so must be bearing adjustment.... I hope
    will keep you updated

    Hi,

    some update....

It seems that on my rhs there is a slight play in my Koni damper insert to the strut.
I tighten this lock cap before but need to re-torque it again I guess. Will try again and see if that helps ;-))

after checking again I noticed that play was not in bearing but somewhere from koni strut.
after disambling strut from inner fender it turned out that the little play left was from the metal tube (inside the two rubber bushings) where the koni insert rod goes trough when mounted intostrut damper bearing in inner fender.
the play is now (with proper adjusted wheel bearing) that small that you can't see it but just feel a tiny movement when grabbing thu overlapping part of upper tube and konistrut. so no play on grabbing at 9 and 3 'O clock and the tiniest play at 6a and 12
I hope this is clear / makes sense to all of you !?
if not I will sent picture tomorrow.

    cheers,
    Bart

Makes perfect sense. I didn't want to say it but you would have to be very, very bad at setting the preload on bearings to get that much play.

I like to tighten mine a bit more than aircraft too. Not much lateral forces on aircraft wheels unless you are doing a ground loop. My opinion.
