    Early CIS and cold start

304065's post here http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...light-on-again reminded me of something I wanted to share with early CIS drivers.

My car had the resistor installed bridging the alternator light, I believe as part of a recall or dealer upgrade. The unintended consequence of this resistor is that it affects the CIS cold start valve. The cold start is governed by a thermo-time switch. This little guy gets its juice to start the timer from a relay. This relay is supposed to only be energized when the car is running, as indicated by alternator output on D+. What I found though is that the added current flow through the alternator light with resistor was enough to energize this relay, and so my thermo-time switch was energized immediately. The result was I only got the cold start injector's participation for one or two cranks, then it cut out. Made for some difficult cold starts. Unfortunately it took me close to 15 years to figure this one out! Yeah, I'm slow.
