Thread: Sealant for gasoline

    Sealant for gasoline

I have a leaking float bowl on my Solex carb. The bowl and mating surface were professionally surfaced by a Solex expert. The gasket was replaced however I still get a small amount of gas (no dripping) on the underside of the float bowl. I have been hesitant using a sealant and wanted to check for your recommendation/comment. Thank you for your help.

    Hylomar

In my formula car days we used Hylomar around fuels with generally good results.
It's a non-hardening, non-setting blue paste that is fuel resistant. In those days (20-30 years ago) it came from the original manufacturer, but was later made under license by Permatex.

You might Google it for current opinions, as many sealants have changed due to environmental concerns.

There's also Pro Seal, a 2-part fuel tank sealer used in the aviation industry. Aircraft Spruce sells it. Be sure to wear rubber gloves when working with the stuff, since it will wash off with soap & water -- after about 2 weeks.

    Hi Gary,

Possibly the pipe that is pressed into the float bowl is not as tight as it should be to prevent weeping fuel. Send the offending float bowl back to me & I will address the issue.

Cheers from your own "Solex expert".

+1 On Jon B. Hylomar still works and is the way to go for fuel. Permatex #85420 is the name it goes by today and it's still blue. Also, cutting it with a little acetone to get a nice even thin layer works well for those tiny imperfections in mating surfaces.

Hylomar is great stuff, ask any old Harley owner. Works very well for sealing trans chain cases that seem to leak ALL THE TIME on the old HD's
