Rubber strips under early engine grilles

Does anyone have the story on the use of thin rubber strips under the engine grills where the slats might come in contact with the engine cover? I have seen these on very early '65 cars but Im not clear when the factory stopped using them.

My '66 (December '65) has them. It was a Euro delivery.

Found them but no definitive info about the model years they were used

Mine is a '66. I assume they were used for all the SWB grilles until 68 when the grille changed.

I've had my Oct '65 912 for almost 30 years and today was the first time I noticed I have the rubber strips. This might explain why I can't find any numbers stamped that might tell me if my lid is original.
