    70 2.2 Targa - turn on tips

    Hi guys,

Recently bought a 2.2T, it's my first carburetor car so the moment we turn on and off the car is usually a different experience. I've seen some videos on people starting this cars by first pressing the acelerator for 1/ 2 times and only than turning the key, so I was wondering is there any tips for the starting of these cars?
And when shutting down? Should we accelerate it before turning off the key? How do you guys do it?

    Thanks guys

Depending on state of tune, condition of accelerator pumps, condition of throttle linkage, ambient temperature, and how long since last run, you push the pedal all the way down, so the accelerator pumps give the cylinders a shot of fuel, then release the pedal and push about half way down then crank engine. Usually that's enough to start it, unless its been awhile since last run, or its very cold. DO NOT pump throttle while cranking. Different conditions may call for more pumping before cranking, and hot restarts are usually done by opening throttles before cranking and holding down while cranking. Usually when hot the engine doesn't need more fuel so pumping isn't necessary, just holding throttle open while cranking to admit more air. When turning off just simply let it idle and turn off. You will have to experiment a little to find out what exactly your engine needs. Unlike modern cars older cars actually require you to think when starting them.

Thanks edmayo! Just what I was looking for. And I agree with you, these cars really makes you think and have our minds focused completely on them, from the moment you turn on the key, to the minute you turn it off. And I'm loving it!

One more thing, what do you mean by "opening the throttles"?

    Thanks

Just another way of saying "to push down the throttle pedal"

Of course, Ed nailed it. But just to clarify, especially if the car has been sitting a while, best to turn the key to the 'run' position (all electrics on, just before the 'start' position) to allow the fuel pumps to run for 10 seconds or so, to build up fuel pressure.
