    Shear bolts

Are the heads of these boots designed to shear when installing them.

So, the heads are already sheared and you haven't installed them yet? Looks like you had them plated with no head?

    Bob,
I didn't get to take this car apart. I have a SWB car. I'm restoring a LWB car. They got added to my pile of fasteners to be plated. Only when I went to install them did I recognize there was a issue. I've been involved with about 6 to 8 restorations. All SWB and one 356 Carrera. I've never gotten to take a car apart other than mine. It's always been a bunch of boxes that have sat around for decades. Here you go, "make it nice please". Don't misunderstand, I'm grateful for the opportunity. My dream is to take one apart, shoot pictures and catalog everything. There is sleuthing involved for sure. Thank God for the folks on this site.

Where are these bolts, and why do the shear? I'm living Chris's dream, taking apart my 912, but I haven't run across these yet.

    Charlie,
Unless you have a 69 LWB 912 or maybe a 76 912E you don't have them. Or at least I haven't run into a SWB car that had them. They are the bolts that hold the steering column in place. I've been told many of these have been replaced with alan head bolts. My guess is they are used to protect the steering wheel lock as a theft deterant.

    Yes, exactly..

absolutely - otherwise the concern would be that one could defeat the steering wheel lock by loosening 2 fasteners.
