    Newbie- Incoming '71 911T

    Hi All,

Congrats on an awesome forum/ early 911 resource. I've just joined up in anticipation of the arrival of my '71 911T Targa...and the excitement is starting to get to me, this will be my first early 911, and first Porsche. I'm in Melbourne, Australia- and should receive the car in the next couple of days (purchased interstate).

I've been out of classic cars for around 6 years now- having sold my '68 Maserati Mexico in 2010 to fund our first house purchase, then came kids- and you know the rest. I was always hoping to get into an early 911, but as you all know the market has moved majorly in the last few years...with prices even more impressive here down under than in the US.

I had all but given up on the idea of an early 911, and had started setting my sights on an impact-bumper car when a car came up for sale that fit my price-orbit...

I'll be sure to put up more photos once it arrives, but the rough details are as follows... Originally a Canadian car I believe, delivered in silver paintwork. Now black-on-black, and with a RHD conversion (as are many early Porsches here). The model, RHD conversion and non-original colour obviously are part of it's less than stratospheric price: but that also gets me into the drivers seat. I had a full PPI by a Porsche specialist- and the key comments that kept me interested where that the body (which has been restored previously) is as good as any you will find on an early 911, and the assessment of the mechanicals was equally promising: with the 2.2L engine making excellent compression in all cylinders, with a good leak-down result.

There are a few cosmetic issues with the trim that I hope to sort in time (the dash-trim is incorrect due to a later dash being used for the RHD conversion, door handles are tired, rear window moulding trim is missing etc)- but it seems that parts are in general available, and first I intend just to drive and enjoy it!

I've attached a few photos below, but will post more once I have the car in my driveway- and the impressions of the first drive.

Hope to contribute/ learn a lot from this awesome online community.

Those are some damn nice teasers there Remi. Welcome! You even got the right headlight lenses...

You have a pretty good resource a bit closer to home as well, the 901 Reg.

Congratulations Remi. What a buzz. I am really excited about taking delivery of my 2.4S that should be arriving in the UK on my birth date. Sure I love my 65 race car but the S will be as equally special. These old school cars are really where it is at. Just don't tell anyone as it will drive the prices up

Congrats - the photos look real nice. I took delivery of my 71T Targa from another member on here about a month ago. Nothing quite like a the sound of the carbs on the open road!

Ah- The Mexico... always happy to post a photo of it. Great times with that car, and really looking forward to starting the 911 chapter.

Thought I'd post a quick update...

I took delivery of the Targa a couple of days ago- it was filthy having sat on a truck for a week...but I managed to find the time to clean it up and have a quick spin around the block. Since then, the weather has set in here, and work has prevented any further outings. I did managed to lock the keys in the car after my first drive, which was a bit embarrassing (new car...new routine).

The body/paint/exterior trim is in great shape, and the engine pulls well and seems to make great power for a 2.2L

The interior is a bit more worn, and there a few little bits and pieces to sort out (a large part of the fun I guess). Short-Term I'll look to replace the window winders, sun-visors, front 1/4 window handle trim pieces, I need seat-belt bolt trim caps and door end plugs. Later, the dash knee pads are cracked, the seats have a few little scratches/ tears and the A-pillar interior trim looks pretty worn. Eventually, I may seek to put in an original-spec dash- as a later dash was used for the RHD conversion. Also- the fitted 90's radio is rubbish, and I'll be on the look-out for either a period replacement, or a period-looking modern radio (Becker Mexico?) Currently, the car is fitted with a Momo prototipo steering wheel, but I have the original...being a shorter guy, I am finding I am far too close to the wheel when I have a comfortable pedal position: is this likely to improve if I go back to the original wheel?

Apart from Pelican parts, Lakewell interiors and this forum of course, are there other places that are a reliable source of early 911 parts that people would recommend?

Anyway, enough rambling- photo of the car being delivered, and then post-wash attached. Can't wait for the first real drive...

    Hi remi!

As you note, we have so many great people on this board who can help source parts and give excellent advice & knowledge! My best advice is be proactive and reach out to people, and start developing relationships. Everything you're looking for or need to know exists.

Some of my favorites are EASY, Retro Automotive Products, Parts Obsolete, AASE, Ed Anspach, Stoddard, International Merchantile, and many, many more!
