Help: Does a 911/01 gearbox fit in a swb?

    Dear all,
i could get a nice and rather non expensive 911/01 gearbox with the nice ZA fifth gear, but would this gearbox fit in the swb, or is is better to take the gears and transfer them in the 901/902 gearbox?

    best regards

I don't have my spec books here but if it's a push type clutch Mag box,it will fit and work. But the differentials are different and the SWB drive flanges won't work in the Mag box. So it won't work unless you figure out to deal with the axles. All the internals are interchangeable but the ring gear needs to be switched onto the 901 carrier. A complete rebuild will probably need to be done with a ring and pinion set-up. Good news right. G.Led

My 67 912 has stock axles that worked with the original aluminum transmission. My current transmission is a late 914 mag transmission with a 69 to 71 nosecone built by G Box. Tom Conway at Carquip had these made for my car combining the drive flanges from the two transmissions.

    chris,
    this is neat technique..
    thank you for your input.
    @g.led
    also thank you

btw: the intended purchase of the gearbox was put on hold by ebay kleinanzeigen?...!!
but still the 911/01 is a nice set up, and I agree to chris, that maybe the A is too short for the intended use

    best bavarian regards

The short answer is "No friggin' way!".
A very talented, experienced, well equipped shop with employees with grey hair could make it work, though. Albeit, at great expense

    Jim,
When it came to this car nothing was/is cheap and neither were these. Everything fit perfect on assembly and has run very smooth with zero leaks. At 12000 miles, parts were inspected and they still work fine.
The machine shop was staffed with guys who had hair almost as grey as mine.

For many years I've been racing a '65 2 liter 911 with a 914 box. It has a 911 nose and 914 flanges with a Guard LSD. I use 914 inner CV joints with Krytox grease. All bolts together with proper geometry for a lowered suspension. No failures.

That's way easier than trying to stuff a 911/01 gear box in a SWB.

What I have works. I had been out of the Porsche world for 20 years and relied on others for a solution. This is what was recommended at the time. Had I known of Sanders solution I might have gone in that direction. I run a Wavetrac TBD and we changed a few gears and everything seems to work. My car is a street car not a race car. Sanders solution could work well for Haul. The gears other than 1st in the 911/01 are almost ideal for a POLO 912 and that's what Haul is in the process of building. It's up to him to pick a direction.

    ????

I'm not sure what the big deal is.

We do it all the time in vintage racing. Mag case provides much greater flexibility for diffs.
