rubber bracket for steeringshaft-steering house connection

My technician claims I need the below rubber for this connection. It sits on the end of the steering shaft, where it moves through the bottom of the smugglers box onto the steering house.

However, none of my 3 cars from 65 did not have this when I bought them as projects and a friend of mine also does not have it on his early 1965.

Sierra Madre offers one correct for 1965 they claim.

    What is correct?

Early cars did not use the shroud. Look at the steering rack casting and it will tell you whether it may have had a shroud or not. Early racks had no shoulder for provision of a shroud. My Sept 65 302136 (MY66) RHD car did not - but it was cast in 52/64. Whereas a November '65 LHD 912 (MY66) rack I have, cast 35/65, does.
It all depends on the casting. Another interesting changeover for the Transition threads - but which one.

Do not believe anything Sierra Madre says regarding parts fitment. They are consistently wrong on so many parts. They just want to make it easy for them and sell more parts.
