Need help in identifying 65-66 seats

Looking for advice on how to correctly identify 1965-1966 front seats.

My 65/66 has later seats in it (1970-71?) and I want to replace them with period correct seats.

Are there certain features that would identify the 65-66 seats. As say compared to 1967 seats?

Not really, except for date stamps on the hinges if they haven't been rubbed off.

    Ciao

I'm afraid I can only give you some basics. First, a '67 seat is the same as a mid/late-'65 or '66 seat. But, there are two different 1965 seats. I'm guessing your car's from late 1965 since you asked about "1965-1966 front seats."

    VERY EARLY SEATS

The very first '65s--up to chassis 301045 (~April-May 1965)--had one seat (901.521.001.20/901.521.002.20) and cars from 301046 through the end of '67 had another (901.521.001.21/901.521.002.22).

I think the big visible difference is that the early seats had six pleats in the insert and the later seat had five. Here's a photo from an early brochure showing a 6 pleat seat:

    MID-'65 THROUGH '67 SEATS

The big change in the seats was the headrest. Up through 1967 Porsche headrests were attached to the back of the seat:

If the seats weren't fitted with headrests there would be no brackets or holes for headrests.

    SEATS FROM 1968-ON

After 1968 the headrests had prongs that went into the top of the seat:

The key point here is that all '68-on seats have the two holes on the top of the seatback (according to Brett Johnson's The (early) 911 & 912 Porsche -- A Restorer’s Guide to Authenticity).

So, 911 seats without holes for a headrest and with five pleats should be correct for your car.

Here's a photo of the seats in my car (301382 so these are the early/mid-1965 on seats):

That's the best houndstooth I could get in 1997 but it's not a perfect match.

Be aware that 356C (and probably 356B) seats look the same but won't fit. The rails are a different distance apart.

What do you make of this Jim. I dissembled may Sept '65 car hinges yesterday. Found these markings. They are original to the car, five pleat perforated black leatherette, all as they should be but that hinge date??? But smudged but ...

There are so many mysteries in this car!!!

Not sure what to make of the date stamp, if it is actually a date stamp. Looking at your hinge tells me that your car is RHD, though.

    Regards
