    70-S...washer between strut and balljoint???

My 69/70 parts book (plate 4/1, illustration part 40/1) is a washer located between the ball joint and strut. I do NOT recall this being in place during disassembly, and my 73 parts book no longer shows this part. Before I assembly these pieces, I would appreciate hearing thoughts as to the necessity of this washer...perhaps made obsolete by newer balljoint design?? Thank you

Your 73 uses a different strut and ball joint than the one used in 71. You have no "washer" and shouldn't have one.

Jim - perhaps I am not reading your reply correctly, but to clarify I am referring to my 70-S (you mentioned 71 and 73). Are you saying I should DISREGARD the use of a washer despite that the 69/70 parts book calls for it? And again, I did not find one at disassembly but heck knows what previous owners had disassembled and put back together. Lastly, yes...my 73 book does NOT show the use of a washer.

Sorry, I was thinking we were talking about a 73S. Yes, the 69 - 71 911s use a very thin washer between the ball joint rubber cup and the strut. The replacement ball joints have a different seal and don't need the washer, though.

    Regards

Jim - thank you again, and yes, I have new replacement balljoints in place (in the photo0 which have a collar secured by a spring at the top....so it seems no washer. If you don't mind I have another question: In the 69/70 parts book they show a choice of two types of hardware to secure the strut to the ball joint. Mine uses the 10MX30 hex head bolt (at least that was the way it was when I disassembled it), but they also show the 'pin' type bolt. At least from the parts book it appears either can be used. Just curious what if anything requires one or the other to be used. Thank you for your helpful and prompt replies.

I saw that , too. I think they put the "Wedge Pin" in there just to confuse people. You can't use it, only the bolt. The "Wedge pin" hadn't even been invented in 69/70! The base of the strut is different for the " wedge pin" and so is the ball joint. Notice that there is no slot when using the wedge pin.

Jim - thank you again...most helpful and clarifying....strut in place, bolt in...all good!
