Thread: Seat Belt Warning Wiring

  1. #1

    Seat Belt Warning Wiring

I am trying to sort all of the functions on a 911S targa with sport seats -- and would like to restore the buzzer and warning light function. So far, I have found that the wiring under both front seats is frayed with missing insulation in some areas. Where can I buy the replacement wiring for both sides?

I would appreciate any other guidance on where to look for problems (I am assuming, for now, that the relays and buzzer mechanisms still work -- so that it's a good approach to replace the bad wiring first (?) ... Currently -- the dash warning lights stays constantly on whenever the electrical system is on.)

I am assuming -- maybe incorrectly -- that the warning light and buzzer are designed to switch on whenever there is weight in either of the seats and the respective seat belt is unbuckled -- then go "off" when each belt is fastened, NO?

    THANKS MUCH.

What year car are you dealing with? Do you have a wiring diagram for your car?

Seat belt circuit should only revolve around the belt latch and the ignition, not the seat itself, that technology came later on. The wiring is fairly simple for this system, you should be able to replace whatever wires you need with out much concern. You can check out this place for assistance though.

    Shift Knob Maker,

Thanks for your response. Sorry for omitting - it is a 1972 Targa S with sport seats. I do not have a wiring diagram (although I have seen copies on the internet). However, I have zero experience reading a diagram so I'm not sure how much benefit that would provide.

Any guidance you can provide would be helpful and appreciated.

    Thanks

If you do not have the original receivers with the contacts the system will not work.
Timmy2 (Dennis) can probably repair your existing wiring.

If you can post a picture of the wires you are dealing with, that would help. Sounds like maybe the connection is not being made at the seat belt latch. That would make the light stay on all the time.

The loom under the seat should be an old coiled telephone type cord with a plug at the end. You should have a wire with a plug coming off the receiver. I do think there was something in the seat to detect a passenger or driver, otherwise what would turn it on?

That is a good point, however I think on the early cars, only the driverside had the seat belt warning, so if the car is turned on the drivers seat belt needs to be attached. Who cares about the passenger

Now I may have to go dig out my wiring diagrams.

You are correct, no wiring on passenger receptacle or coiled wiring on floor, so just for driver.

Really? I have seen numerous passenger receptacles with wiring, there is even a set for sale on the board. Saying that, if it is correct than they would start in 1973 with passenger wiring. Need to dig out some pictures to see if the 1972 receptacle had wiring.
