    My wife would never spend that much on a magazine subscription for me. So I signed up for myself last month...

    Looking forward to receiving the first issue... mind you, it's got some expectation riding with it (the Canadian $ price is c.$100CAD per issue

    With Dec 2016 just around the corner, can one join 000 subscription this week and still receive the prototype issue 000 ?

    Yes.

    The print quantity for the prototype issue has been ordered with an overage. It isn't a huge overage, and I'll be curious to see how long it lasts (thru Christmas?), but you're fine—unless we get some sort of ridiculous rush on Friday.
