    Defective (new!) relay?

A week or so back my blinkers and hazard flashers went out ('72 911) so thinking of the easiest solution I bought a new Flasher Relay. Once installed, as soon as I hit the button for the Hazard Flasher the flasher fuse (#2) blew immediately. I replaced the fuse, then with the key in the on position tried the blinkers (L/R) which immediately blew the (rear?) blinker fuse (#8?). I tried this a couple of times back and forth with the same result.

I put the old relay back in and the fuses do not blow but the flashers and blinkers do not work.

Did I get a defective relay? OR what else could be going on here???

More and more we are getting new electrical parts that are defective. From your description it sounds as if there is a dead short somewhere in the circuit which is causing the fuses to blow. This might not be happening with the old relay in place because it was damaged by the same short and is not allowing current to pass sufficient to trip a fuse. Swap in a known good relay and see what happens - it will probably also blow a fuse meaning that you'll have to go looking for the short to ground. One last thought - recycle your hazard flasher switch several times between "on" and "off." They sometimes get hung up and prevent the flashers from working.

    Thanks much ejboyd5.

    Questions:

-Since it is blowing Fuse 2 when the Hazards are engaged and Fuse 8 when a Blinker is engaged does this give me any clue as to where the short may be? As opposed to fuses 9 and 10?

-Could the Hazard Flasher Switch be the problem? Is there any electronics in them to "go bad"?
