    Post rebuild oil preference?

Hi all, I have a stock 2.2T that was just rebuilt. It still smokes a bit on start up so I was thinking of going back to swepco. I'm in Northern California and use the car as a cruiser. I run at 200F all the time. Which oil weight would you go with?

Interesting! Do you still get a puff of smoke on start up with that oil?

A puff at startup is normal.

Only when sitting until cold or over night. High zinc content is good for older cars. Avoid synthetics

The VR1 is a good oil, ZDDP above 1200ppm is more important than it being a synthetic or not.
I've been running Mobil1 15w-50 synthetic since 1975 or so and have never had a problem. No cam wear or any other issues.
I live in Texas and with our hot climate I think synthetics give better protection at high ambient.
I'm a little surprised you are at 200 in Northern California, Thats about where I run when its over 90, and mines a 2.7 MFI.
I do have the 28 tube brass cooler.

Has it been broken in yet? That may or may not change your smoke.....
I run Redline 20-50. Mainly because it was easy to get and recommended from a engine builder that I trust.
It runs lower temp than my old Castrol 20-50 and maintains better warm oil pressure.
When I ran out of Redline recently, I tried Valvoline and the temp went up (20-25 deg) and the warm pressure went down.
    Those are just my experiences.....

    Thanks guys.

Harvey, I'm at about 350 miles of 500 mile break in. Do you mean this full synthetic redline oil: https://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=8 ?

If you your gauge indicates 200 degrees , something is not right . Maybe it's a calibration problem or maybe your oil thermostat is not working correctly . A 2.2T does not run at 200 in cool weather .

Morning puff in the cold is normal, and I'm with you, it has been unusually cold in NorCal.
I swear by Joe Gibbs oils. High zinc for air-cooled engines, DT50 I think its called now.
