    Such a bummer. So many people loved that tree. Really helped people understand how magnificent the Redwoods are.

    Major Bummer I past through this tree at 10 years old. Still remember how huge it was

    I went with my daughter when she was at UC Santa Cruz, shame they cut the hole and weakened the tree.

    I've got a piece of property a couple of miles away from this spectacular old grove, have walked through it a hundred times and am in total awe every time. Yeah, things were different back when they disfigured this tree. There's a stump near it 33 ft. in diameter. It would have been the largest tree on earth had they not cut it down just to prove they could.

    Sad I've never been but had planned to visit in 2017. I'll still visit but it's one of those iconic places you have visit once in your lifetime.

    That's just it, Giant Sequoia wood is too brittle to be used for structural lumber. Might be good fencing but that's about it. These giants are 2,000 years old and they killed another by stripping it's bark in sections to reassemble in London to prove to Europeans how big these trees really are.
