Sport seat prices taking off into the upper stratosphere...

    I remember 30 years ago when I purchased my first 911....a 73 911 E.
At the time it had "comfort" seats.
So I looked around and found a set of restored black leather sports seats for $1000.
At the time, I thought it was a huge amount of money.
The car itself only cost me $10k.
But it was a great investment in comfort even though the car paid for it in a weight penalty (they were dang heavy).

Well 30 years later and the cars are now 15 times as expensive....a good 73 E could easily run $150k (or more).
And so the sport seats follow suit.
15 times the cost 30 years ago now finds real (nice) sports seats costing $15k....more than my original car purchase
    back in the late 80's.
Our poor hobby is no longer "poor" anymore.
Somehow I stay invested and interested in our early Porsches, but it's definitely takes more commitment these days.
These have a reserve of $15k.
Beautiful and the price of admission, breathtaking.

Not sure the sport seat market is as bad as you think. I believe those ebay seats bid up to the proper level (or close); they need to be completely redone.

12k(?) seems to be the number currently for a pristine pair of leather seats with double locking frames.

Restorations have never been cheap. When a restoration costs over $200,000, or more, are $12,000 seats out of line? Probably not.

None of this will ever get cheaper. We just have to get used to it.

One thing you need to watch carefully is the insured value on all the parts in your garage. If you pay $15,000 for seats and then store them in your loft your homeowners insurance won't cover them in the case of a fire.

I agree that the prices are high....but $15K is the new going rate for a set of rare seats.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.

Are the 72-73 seats on ebay truly original? I didn't know that the perforation continued throughout the center area? I thought it stopped, like the below pic.

    Scott,

As far as I know (and I have seen) you are correct.....
My '73 leather sport seat perforations end at the top seam for the backs, and end at the bottom seam for the bottoms. Mine were redone in in 1990 by someone who used my original hides for the patterns...

    - The first pic is from 1990 with my original seat next to the one that was just completed...

    - The second pic is of what they look like today after 27 years...

_ The third pic is from my buddy Randy Wells... because I like it...

    Hope this helps,
    cm

The seat in post 7 is mine and original, 72S. I posted it to show stiching sequence, at least when this seat was built. The perforation skipped where the stiching was. Gordon
