Received a call to inquire about my car....

... out of the blue, I get a call from a fellow who I almost hung up on as I had to ask - "can you get to the point?" This fellow knew my first full name, but I only use my nick name. He said he heard from another person (that allegedly knew me) that I had an older Porsche, then asked if I'd like to sell it. He couldn't remember the other person's name, but he wants an early 911S or 911E. After some discussion, he emphasized that he wanted an original. He knew what value matching numbers had, but I told him I've got a '76 Euro 3.0 and a '74 915. ...said he didn't care about the drive train. He included that he has an SC, but doesn't like the color. I said, paint it. No, he'd like to have the orig. color on the car. I said mine is Guards Red, but the COA says special order Silver Metallic. He said that's a great color and he'd probably get it repainted to original.

I asked him where he heard of the car. It was when he was in LA recently when he bumped into this other person at a breakfast joint. I started to laugh (I haven't been to LA in 30 years). He then said where are you? SF. I asked where are you? - New Jersey. I said that's an awfully long way away, but no problem, he could be anywhere in the US in 4-6 hours. He left his email and phone number and wanted some picks.

I'll keep this to 3 short paragraphs, but it just doesn't add up. I'm sure he's seen the registry or other source that could have my given name (however, I rarely include a phone number on anything), but why make up something about one of my "friends" gave him my number. I'm not following up on it, but thought I'd share this little story.

    thanks,
    kj

I have a certain Rare car that I have had under wraps since 1985. ( not a porsche or Ferrari) I took it to a car show in 1990 and got weird calls like this for 2 years. Car hunters (Blood suckers) are relentless chasers. I haven't showed it since and I don't tell anyone what it is or where it is. Kind of like Frank and the very quiet 901. Can't blame him a bit

Post his email and name and we can flood his email box with pictures. This could be fun.

My guess is he got your name and phone from the company that insures your car or the DMV. Happens all the time.

Creepy and intrusive maybe but if the dude buys cars this way I'm just curious what makes it a scam?

Looking forward to my phone call.

It's such a strange and somewhat scary world out there. I got stopped by 2 creepy looking guys after stepping out of my 911 while going into a store. They wanted to buy my car. Needless to say, my shopping was limited to looking out the front window at my car.

The worlds isnt anymore scary or creepy then it ever was...and probably less so. The media just reports every little incident.
