    Flummoxed

Besides a degenerative L5 and hernia the current thorn in my flesh is hiring good workers. I have to believe there are still industries in the U.S. that enjoy a large concentration of laborers who work hard and passionately. So my question is what are those industries and how do I poach from them?

We can train anyone who has common sense and a willingness to learn.

    Another question:

With the new administration is there any hope that work visas will become more of an option for business owners like me who literally cannot find skilled workers who are U.S. citizens?

    hey Frank,
I may be "ditzi" when it comes to "distys" But I know that getting skilled labor here from European and Asian countries is still very doable. Hungarians I know are very hard working and very skilled for one example. It however requires an immigration attorney and time once you Find the right candidate. Finding is the problem. If you invest in the wrong one you are stuck for a few years as you have to sponsor them here. I am sure you can get some good leads on someone that wants to immigrate right here on this site. You can prove that you cannot find the skills you require from the USA labor pool and that is the first justification required to start the process. They also need to be skilled in the trade of which they are coming here for, and they need to be able to prove that. I have a friends kid that lives in Australia. Hard working great personality and skills, however he knows nothing about my trade. I can't get him over here to save my life.

Just a thought, HAve you looked into intern programs at the local colleges and Tech schools? THey are tryem before you buyem. Dirt cheap and you can dismiss them for another candidate at the drop of a hat. The professors and instructors know who the eager aggressive ones are and they will almost always drop everything to talk to you about a student recommendation. THey are still in school so you need to be flexible with their hours, as do they. But trying several at a time and rotating them until you find a good trainee is very doable.

    Thanks for your thoughts Randy.

I would love to find a great immigration attorney if anyone has a recommendation.

I will ask A friend at my old stomping grounds. We brought in people from India by the dozens on H1 B1 Visas.
Seriously consider the interns at the tech schools. Teachers can point you to the right ones and they are brand new, not yet tainted by the lazy bug. I think the biggest problem with the kids these days is Video gaming. ALL they learned how to do after school is lay around and drive fake porsche's to pick up hookers and blow. They good ones are hard to find these days. I am 1 - 15 to 1-20 keep versus cycle. They are out there and when you find them keep them. Also don't forget to look at the pool of GIRLS. I find that they are much harder workers than the boys these days. They are Smart, Aggressive with something to prove for themselves, eager to learn anything and they have smaller hands. My Female employees can get there hands into Broadcast racks where my guys are having to take things apart to do the same task. Worth a look.

    I have.

And simply don't have the time or energy to deal with "1 outta 20" odds. That's been my experience as well and I'm all DONE with it.

You know, I am with you 100% It is so frustrating. Dealing with the lack of competence, lazy, unmotivated seems to be the norm. I have a hard time motivating my own son. I just dont get the complacency. i know where to steal good help but you have to pay a premium to get them to swing over. Then your margins tank because the customer doesn't want to pay fair rates. You end up holding both ends of the short stick. That with Cal insurance going up 15% this year and Thanks Obamacare doubling the health insurance rates, I could take a job and make more money than this thing produces. Or close it and cut the 65K a month in expenses and retire. Seriously contemplating being DONE DONE

I have some with me now. Excellent suggestion but.... I have some good ones and had some bad ones. They are very regimented and precise or they have a serious chip on their shoulders. No offense to our great Vets. I had one that refused to wear my uniform because I fly the American flag on the sleeve. Serious as a heart attack. Where does that come from? Floored me.

This right here is the key. There's 300MM residents in U.S.A. surely there are plenty that fulfil your need at any one time, you just have to pay for them. Importing talent is a way to combat wage inflation, good for the bosses but perhaps a big part of the xenophobia of the working class.

Where I work they are always employing foreigners, with management bellyaching over how hard it is to find staff. It's only hard to find staff at the price they are offering, increase the price and magically qualified candidates will poke their heads out.
