    Base material for body gluing

I'm restoring chassis 1744 and came across something I don't recall seeing before. It's a thin, porous fabric glued to A, B and C pillars and elsewhere as a base for gluing headliner and vinyl trim. Certainly makes sense as adhesion would be better than gluing directly to painted steel. Is this material/process unique to early cars? Also, is anyone familiar with type of material and source for it?

Common upholstery technique...found on all generation cars. Sometimes called tack strip, but also used to soften metal edges for a smoother contour. Makes for a more "finished" and softer edge.

Interesting. Have recently stripped original headlinings and pillar trim from 2 x 1967 build cars ('68MY) and did not come across this.

Could it be that Reutter used it and Karmann did not?

On the basis that neither of my '68 cars were Karmann built, yet don't have the tack strips, I can't back that theory.

More likely deleted at some point in time for cost or time reasons?

....we'd need to check all non-restored headlinings '65-'73 to be sure. Someone out there must know this already.......
