    10 Number VIN Decoder

    Hi

I used to use a VIN decoder website for older Porsche's that you could enter the VIN and it would give details of the engine number etc
does anybody know of a site similar?

    Thanks in advance

The critics will comment on errors on this site but I like this for relatively easy reference...

Who cares, Peter? All that info is in print and reliable. You just have to look for it or trust some

All one ever needs to know about 9 and 10 digit chassis numbers. It came from a pocket size book, not some random website.

    Semi-related story.

Several years ago, I wanted to see what my VIN told me. So since I had the registration papers sitting in my office, I typed it into one of those websites. Which then told me that wasn't a valid VIN. Scratching my head, I tried again and got the same result. So I took the papers and went out to my garage to compare to the VIN plate, and found out that the DMV had put 2 extra digits in my registration.

Since I had all the records from the previous owner, I dug out my folder and found out that when I went and got the paperwork to do an out of province inspection, the people at the DMV had repeated two of the digits. So for over a decade I had been running around with registration that didn't match the car (thankfully, the insurance was correct).

Surprisingly, it was very easy to remedy. I just had to bring the car in so they could verify it. Unfortunately, my registration comes up for renewal in January, which is still 5 months away from being able to drive the car. So a couple of years ago I forced myself to go in before tucking the car away for the winter - and managed to pick the weekend when the whole computer system was down for maintenance. But at least the lady was kind enough to fill out all the paperwork so I didn't have to bring the car back.
