    Hardware Grade Change

Can anyone tell me what year the hardware grade changed from 8G to 8.8, 10K to 10.9, etc.? Best I can find are two DIN papers, one from 1965 showing the old grade and one from 1979 showing the new grade. I have narrowed it down to late 60's to early 70's. Maybe some of you guys can look at your original cars and let me know. Thanks, Vic

I am restoring what is left of a 67 911. What looks to be still original has the early hardware. Today I looked at an all original 1974 VW Bus, it has the later style 8.8 hardware.

Ok, let's take it one step further. I was sorting through some hardware I recently had replated and came across three better bolts. Looks like it went from 8G to 8 8 to 8.8. So with the 8G on a 67 and the 8.8 on a 74, the 8 8 must have been for a very short time. Let's try to figure out what years this happened. Name: IMG_4072.jpg

Vic, hardware grades such as 8.8 and 10.9 are ISO metric property classes.
I don't think there was a specific date or year when all hardware grades changed to ISO, but instead a gradual phase-out of some DIN standards by German manufacturers.

Yes, DIN-graded hardware was still in use when your 67 was built. I have DIN-graded elastic bolts (KAMAX 8G) unique to Simplified Differentials, which weren't used prior to 68.

Jon B. is correct in that the change from DIN to IOS nomenclature was a gradual thing with no enforced implementation date - so much depended upon the country and the particular standard that was involved. I recommend an internet search for DIN and ISO. There is much information available on the history of the ISO movement and, as always with the internet, I leave it to you as to which items to trust and which to discard.

Thanks guys. A friend of mine has an unrestored 68L that is all 8G style. So that confirms what G.Led stated. My friend also has one of the last 914/6's, it is a 72 model year and has a mix of early and late, or better, DIN and ISO.

The gradual phase in makes sense. I was also thinking that it could have to do with inventory vs. demand. A small company like Porsche at the time might need much longer to deplete inventory than VW.

So now maybe someone with a 69, 70 and 71 can chime in on what is on their cars.

    Here's another car for reference.

I looked over my 72 BMW, which has had one exterior repaint but has never been restored, and all the hardware I could see is ISO graded.
It was the German hardware industry that gradually changed their products to ISO metric standards, not the German car manufacturers that purchased their products.
