All H1's were EU as they were not legal in the U.S. when released. The raised script indicates early ones, but not the very early ones as these have the second generation low beam bulb holders.

Caution: You're entering the nerd zone...

There were three generations of H1 lenses:

    1. When they first introduced in '66-'67 the lenses had a much larger prism.

    2. The next generation of lenses had the pattern that we still see today, but the script on the lens was on the outside of the lens.

    3. The third generation, the one we still see today, had the same prism and fluting design that we're familiar with today, but the lettering is on the inside of the lenses.

I don't know the exact dates of when these changes occurred. My sense is given their rarity that the first lenses were produced for only a short time as they quickly improved the optics. Lenses with the lettering on the outside are also a bit rare, but there are many more of them around than the first generation so they must have been produced in higher volumes, perhaps for a longer period of time. Again, I'm not sure when the lettering was changed to the inside of the lens.

Interestingly (at least to a light nerd like me) the optics of fluted lenses are based on Fresnel technology invented by a French scientist of that name in the early 1800's. It's the same technology used on the beautiful lighthouse lenses produced in the 19th century. I was a lighthouse docent at the Cape Blanco Lighthouse on the Oregon Coast for a time and a 10' Fresnel lens with thousands of prisms is beautiful - and can project a 100w halogen bulb 20+ miles out to sea. Not bad for 200 year old technology.
