    What is a 902/1 trans?

I have a January build '66 911 (Solex carbs) that I am restoring. It has Transmission Number 227136 and is a 902/1. Since this car was a barn find and not drivable I haven't explored the transmission. Can anyone help me out with information on this?

    Thanks!

TWJ, are you certain of that Transmission Number? I don't see that number in any range in the Tech Spec book.

902/1 was a very popular transmission type. It was the original 912 5 speed in 1965, used for both 911 & 912 in 1966 from the same serial series, used for both 911 & 912 in 1967 from separate serial series, and again in 1968 for the 911. A F M S X gears with 7:31 pinion & ring. Probably a typo in your serial; 221 instead of 227.

I have both the COA and the Kardex, they both agree with the 227136 number. ???

    So it's a 5 speed and not a 4 speed? I've seen information pointing to both. ???

Nice "sort of short" ratio from the factory box. My '67 has one. A "Z" 5th would be nicer for the highway.

Sorry, you are correct part of series 221722 to 234001 for 1966.

    Just to double check:

    5 Speed or 4 Speed?

Yes, 902/1 is a 5-speed, as described by Dave. Not to be confused with 902/01, which is a 4-speed.
The 227 serial range seems correct to me for a Jan/Feb 66 build date.

AHHHH, thanks for the clarification Jon! That's where my confusion was coming from.

The transmissions are all listed in the little specification booklet. Here are a few ratios:

Transmission Type number of gears 1st gear 2nd gear 3rd gear 4th gear 5th gear ring & pinion
    901/0 5 AA 2.83:1 GA 1.78:1 O 1.22:1 U 1.04:1 Y 0.82:1 4.43:1
    902/0 4 A 3.09:1 H 1.68:1 Q 1.13:1 X 0.86:1 4.43:1
    902/1 5 A 3.09:1 F 1.89:1 M 1.32:1 S 1.04:1 X 0.86:1 4.43:1
    902/01 4 A 3.09:1 H 1.68:1 Q 1.13:1 X 0.86:1 4.43:1
