    How to dismantle seat recliner?

    Hi,

I am trying to take apart the 2 sections of a seat recliner. I have managed to take the spring out and am now left with this (see picture). Does the rusty round washer plate just unscrew?

Also any ideas on the best way to put the spring back in, as it has uncoiled a little and is very strong.

    Thanks for looking

    Yes, that is a Nut.
Gently tab counterclockwise and make sure to soak it in rust solvent first.
Also remove the spring-clip on the splined axel and remove the round metal piece that is held by the lever on that same axis.

Here are a few pics that may help. You will also need to replace the small bushing/spacer between the two main arms. NLA on spacer, so you will have to make your own. 0.030" (1mm) will work in delrin.

Many thanks, that helps me a lot.

How did you get the spring back in place?

I made my own tool. Let me see if I can find my notes.

I did it with just a large screwdriver and a cloth on top of the spring

If you are doing more than one hinge, spending a few minutes on making a tool to remove and replace the main seatback hinge spring makes things much easier and safer.

First, you need to buy a fence gate post topper at any hardware store for about $3. Next, modify it per the illustration below.

The first time you use it there are a few nuances, but after that it should take about 30 seconds to remove and/or replace.

Clamp the piece down and use a long rod or screwdriver as a lever to wind the spring a bit to remove. On assembly, use a punch to set the spring in the center slot and wind it up.

    Good luck
