Targa top in a different color (fabric/paint)

    Hi All,

I am sure that I am not the first person to consider this but I have not been able to find useful info on my plan so far:

I have a crystal blue 69 targa and I am considering a dark blue targa top instead of black. I know that it is not original but I simply love this combination since I saw a meissen blue 356 convD with a dark blue top.

Does anybody know where I can get a dark blue top for my targa roof? Of is it an option to paint the one that I have? My top has just been replaced (by the PO) and I would not mind painting it as long as it stays on and looks good?

    Any advise is highly appreciated.

Pics of different color targa tops as well.

    Happy easter.

    Frank

Maybe find a Saratoga top and paint it?

The problem with Targa's is people drive them with the tops on. They are noisy and ugly no matter what you do. However, take it off, and it is a completely different and wonderful car. So your best solution is to hide the top in the trunk whenever possible.

If you are serious about the color change though, I would talk with Dan at carsinc and see what kind of material or options he would have. It would not look bad with a very dark blue, but as you can see from the previous responses, it isn't something that you would be doing to help the resale value.

+1 for Dan at carsincnj.com He could re-skin it in any color vinyl you want and paint the gutters to match. In my opinion dark navy should have been a factory option would look good on a white targa with blue interior and silver with blue interior.

The factory learned their lessons on customer tastes, they established the "Special Wishes" dept to grant everyone their dream. Now the Porsche option list is as long as a toilet paper roll, with a price to match every wish. EXTRA EXTRA profit for Porsche.

They used to be a lot more flexible. You could make your car as god-awful as you wanted. Now Porsche wants to protect their brand, and greatly limits what they will do. Gone are the days of picking any color you want!

    Hi Guys,

Thanks a lot for the responses. I will try to find out what Dan can do. Regarding the dark top...it is just for me and I do not care whether it devaluates my car or not...It will be my car and part of my collection. When it would come to selling the car....it will be a couple of hundreds to get the top back to the original color so that's not a reason to make it the way I would like it to be. Never thought though it would be so difficult....thought the top layer is vinyl so just use another color and done. Apparently I am mistaking.

    Thanks again for the help.

    Regards, frank

The top layer is vinyl, but recovering is not such an easy job. I think Dan charges around $1k now.
